The OCS Craft Designation

At the OCS, we recognize the craftspeople and hands-on processes that create seed-to-shelf artisanal cannabis products.

To help consumers discover these products, we’ve established the craft designation to set the standard for craft cannabis in Ontario.

Does your product qualify as craft?

To be listed under the craft designation, product submissions for dried flower (including pre-rolls) have to meet specific small-batch and hand-crafted criteria:

Small Batch

We designed the craft designation to promote and support the development of smaller-scale, artisanal cannabis producers. The growing facility produces less than 10,000 kilograms of dried flower per year.

Hand Crafted

The key to the OCS’s definition of craft cannabis is that the flower is harvested and processed by hand and not by machine. This means the product is exclusively:

  • Hang Dried – Hang drying helps maintain the flower’s aroma and flavour profile. Typically, the plant is cut at the base of the stalk and hung in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room for 10 to 14 days.

  • Hand Trimmed – The plant is trimmed manually with specialized scissors and no automated machinery. Hand trimming ensures the cultivar’s characteristics shine through.

  • Hand Packaged – Hand packaging minimizes damage from overhandling and maintains product integrity.
